The Belgian Jean Poulain was born in 1884 in Belgian Congo ( today Dom. Rep. Congo).

In 1920 he discovered art and painting for himself. From 1912 he traveled through various countries in Africa. After completing his expeditions in 1930, he began painting animals based on his notes, sketches and photographs. He died in Belgium in 1967.
